Acidophilus Pearls is a unique type of probiotic supplement that gives you relief from various digestive problems.
Do not be surprised if the next time you visit your dietician or physician and he/she recommends you a “bacterial” diet for maintaining a healthy body. It has been proven medically that certain type of bacteria, used according to prescription, are actually beneficial for the body. Acidophilus Pearls are one such form of probiotic supplement, which contain bacteria which is good for the body, mainly to help in the digestion of the food consumed.
The food that we eat is also a source of helpful bacteria, but their proportion is insufficient to actually make any difference. Hence, it becomes necessary to take such external supplements to provide the required amount of bacteria to the body.
Acidophilus Pearls are pearl-shaped probiotic supplement capsules, which can easily make it to the intestines without being affected by the digestive juices. Besides digestion, Acidophilus Pearls also help in improving the immune system of the body.
Along with Acidophilus Pearls, there are other forms of probiotic supplements made under the brand name Pearls Probiotics, which are manufactured by a Wisconsin-based firm, Enzymatic Therapy Inc. Probiotics are basically useful bacteria which aid in digestion and increasing immunity. They also repel harmful bacteria which may cause stomach problems. Certain researches have shown that probiotics can be used for curing problems like irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.
Pearls probiotics are manufactured in form of pearls, in which micro-organisms (bacteria) are enclosed in the outer-coating of the capsule. On consumption, they travel to the intestines and get dissolved, thus releasing the bacteria, which then start improving the digestion process.
Acidophilus Pearls or probiotics are used for a host of other purposes besides digestion and immunity. They are also used to improve conditions in the following problems:
- Diarrhea caused by intake of antibiotic tablets
- Treating a condition called as Traveler’s diarrhea
- To heal effects of radiation therapy
- To recover from irritable Bowel Syndrome
- To cure yeast infection in the vagina
- To recover from Crohn’s disease
- Treating Ulcerative Colitis
- Treating colds, hay fever and constipation
- Reduce the overgrowth of harmful bacteria present in the small intestine
Probiotics may have some side effects on certain patients. And due to this, it is always advised that medical advice should be taken before starting their use.
In general, acidophilus supplements are recommended in dosages measured in number of live bacteria. That means literally how many bacteria someone will consume with their intake. Adults can be prescribed daily dosage of anywhere between one to 10 billion L. acidophilic bacteria. Do not be alarmed as these are normally enclosed in a single capsule. Acidophilus powder is also available on the market, which can be used by those who simply don’t like taking a capsule every day.
For children, it is strictly recommended, that a pediatrician should be consulted before giving them such supplements. A dosage of 12 million bacteria, split in two doses of 6 million each, is generally recommended for children. Antibiotic effects on the digestive system can be eased off by these supplements.
Acidophilus supplements are available in the form of pills, tablets, powder, liquid and suppositories as well.
Benefits of Acidophilus Yogurt
Acidophilus bacteria is also used in the form of yogurt, called as lactobacillus acidophilus. As has been mentioned time and again before, to maintain a healthy digestive system, a good bacteria-rich diet is very essential. This type of yoghurt can be made easily and flavors can also be added to it.
Acidophilus Yogurt Recipe:
Following is a regular recipe of making acidophilus yogurt:
Step 1- Mix 4 cups (approx 950ml) of milk and 3/4 cups (approx 120g) of powdered milk in a saucepan. Place the saucepan on a medium flame.
Step 2- Keep whisking the mixture constantly to avoid it from sticking to the pan. Heat the milk slowly to up to 87 degrees Celsius. Let the milk cool down after it has reached the desired temperature, to about 46 to 48 degrees Celsius.
Step 3- Put 2 tablespoons (approx48g) of the plain yogurt into a small bowl and add 2 tablespoons (30ml) of milk. Keep whisking the mixture till it becomes smooth.
Step 4-Pour the mixture to the remaining warm milk and stir for 2 minutes.
Step 5- Pour the contents of the saucepan into a utensil/container and cover it properly.
Step 6- Keep the container in the cooler and let it cool for 4 to 6 hours until the yogurt sets.
Step 7- Store it in the refrigerator. Use the yogurt when it is completely chilled.
There are various types of yogurts which have Lactobacillus acidophilus in them:
- Brown Cow
- Stonyfield Farm
- Mountain High
One should also note that if they are buying such yogurts from stores, they should look for the National Yogurt Association’s special and live cultures seal on the containers.
